Informasjon fra Special Hobby:
Following on the from the success of the Phonix 20.15 and 20.16 designs, the Austro-Hungarian Phonix company prepared engineering drawings for a new design in June 1917.

Made from plywood and fabric skinning on a wooden framework, the new aircraft, known as the Phonix D I, mounted two 8mm Schwarzlose machine guns, synchronized to fire through the propeller. The first 11 aircraft were delivered to the K.u.k Luftfarhrttuppen in October 1917 and 20 were delivered to the Austro-Hungarian navy. A total of 120 aircraft were manufactured by the time production ended in October 1918. The type remained in service right to the end of World War 1 and was regarded as a very sturdy aircraft that was easy to handle. However, many pilots were critical to the slow climbing rate and speed in level flight.
