Norway regained her independence after WWII from German occupation. And in the late 40s and 50s in the 20th century, Norway obtained military aids from United States, which including 124 M24 Chaffee light tanks, to build up Norwegian Armor Forces.
By 1967, an upgrade program was offered which including French D-925 90mm low pressure gun. In 1973, the first prototype was introduced, known as NM116. Comparing to M-24, NM116 possesses improved maneverability with GM 6V53T diesel engine. The bow gunner position and co-pilot was eliminated favor of 20mm ammunition stowage. A Swedish Simrad LV3 laser rangefinder was installed, and 7.62 co-axis gun was replaced with 12.7mm M2HB. Tracks from Diehl (Germany) was adopted. In addition, communication system and night vision capabilities were also improved. After conversion, NM116´s top speed on was 57 km per hour, and operation range was improved to 400 km from previous 240 km.
Mass production was conducted in 1975 and 76, and 54 M24 were refurbished as NM116. After obtaining M48 tanks and German Leopard tanks, the Norwegian army stil retained NM116s to conduct anti-tank and reconnaissance tasks until 1993.
